Another  tour of the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery: TO BE ANNOUNCED

Early in 2001 HSEP agreed to sponsor a tour of the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery. Jim Schmick, a member of HSEP quickly took charge of the details. Jim has conducted tours of cemeteries in Harrisburg and was eager to explore and direct a tour of Enola's cemetery, which contains great history for the area. After several meetings with Pastor Snider, members of Zion Lutheran Church, the Cemetery Committee, and Tammy Putt, the cemetery caretaker, the tour quickly grew to "Zion Heritage Day and Cemetery Tour."

The June 24 event included the cemetery tour, a portrayal of a civil war veteran, a display of Victorian clothes, and a presentation of Victorian mourning practices, organ recitals, and displays of Zion Lutheran Church's history. Volunteers from the church provided a guided tour and served refreshments. Over 120 people attended.

We would like to thank the following people for making the first Cemetery Tour a success:

From Zion Lutheran Church: Pastor Dennis Snider, Jacki McElhattan, Deb Enders, Pat Saxton, Judy Brewbaker, Kathy Swords, Linda Frymire, Amanda Hunter, Nancy Hileman, and organists, Tom Notestine and Scott Flinchbaugh.

From the Cemetery Committee: Caretaker and tour guide, Tammy Putt; tour guide Fred Locke along with the assistance of Pat Arter and Ernie Weirick, members of the Cemetery Committee who volunteer their time and effort in maintaining the cemetery.

From the Historical Society: Tour guide and coordinator, Jim Schmick, Civil War actor, Austin Willi, and those volunteers who sold tickets, organized the group tours and sold historical memorabilia -Kitty Deveney, Jane Jackson, Judy Jacobs, Herb Kruger, Emily Stambaugh, and Bonnie Young. .

A special thank you to Richelle Waiters, for her display of Victorian mourning clothes and her presentation on the Victorian mourning practices. Richelle dressed in the garb of that era which added to the presentation.

Anyone who would be interested in helping with the event, please contact us.
